Experiencing the Azores With Support That Helped Me Thrive
By Hana Smid
Travelling to the Azores was something I had been looking forward to for months, but what made the trip truly meaningful wasn’t just the landscapes or the warm weather — it was the way Su and the whole group supported me throughout. From the moment we set off, I felt that people were paying attention not just to the itinerary, but to how I was doing, what I needed, and how to make the experience accessible and enjoyable for me. That sense of being held in mind made a huge difference.
One of the things I appreciated most was how calm and steady the support felt. Nothing was rushed, nothing was pushed, and I never felt like I was slowing anyone down. Instead, I felt genuinely included in a way that allowed me to relax into the trip rather than brace myself for misunderstandings or overwhelm. Su in particular understands my brain in a way that feels rare and safe — she knows how to support me without taking over, and how to check in without making me feel watched. I hope she’ll come on more trips with me in the future, because having someone who “gets” me makes everything more possible.
There were definitely moments where extra support would have helped me enjoy things even more. Clearer explanations before activities — what to expect, how long things would take, and what the sensory environment might be like — would have made some parts smoother. But even when things were a little unclear, the group’s patience and willingness to adapt meant I never felt unsafe or out of place. That flexibility is something I value deeply.
The highlights of the trip are still vivid in my mind: the volcanic lakes, the lush green hills, the quiet moments by the water, and the shared laughter during meals. I loved the balance between exploring and resting, and the way the group created a sense of togetherness without pressure. Some activities could have been improved with more pacing or clearer communication, but overall the experiences felt thoughtful and well chosen.
The hotel was comfortable and welcoming, with staff who were friendly and helpful. The environment felt safe and easy to navigate, which made it much easier for me to settle in. The flights, while long, were handled smoothly, and I felt supported throughout the journey — especially during transitions, which are usually the hardest part for me.
Looking back, what stands out most is not just what I saw, but how I was able to experience it. Feeling supported allowed me to be present, to enjoy the beauty around me, and to connect with the people I was travelling with. That kind of support doesn’t just make a trip easier — it makes it meaningful.
Overall, the Azores were unforgettable, not only because of the place itself but because I was given the space, understanding, and encouragement to experience it fully. I’m grateful for the care that went into making the trip accessible for me, and I hope this blog helps others see how thoughtful support can open the door to experiences that might otherwise feel out of reach.
